At Walnut and 12th Street stands Germania, a free-standing
limestone sculpture carved by Leopold Fettweis in 1877
for the facade of the German Mutual Fire Insurance Company.
Originally, it symbolized the spirit of Germany watching
over the area. As a result of anti-German sentiment during
World War I, the figure’s name was changed to Columbia,
the spirt of America, and “E Pluribus Unum”
was added to her robe. |
